About Biki Chaplain

Biki Chaplain Biki grew up in Texas where she received her bachelors degree and studied under Vives Atsara. In the 1960\'s, she moved to Southern Illinois where she painted part-time while working as a Public Service Administrator and raising three children. She was finally able to pursue her career as an artist full-time in 2003.
Over the years, Biki has used a variety of mediums -- pencil, pen & ink, pastel, watercolor, and oil. In recent years her work has been primarily in oil and tends to be impressionistic in style. She works in plein-air or in her studio from sketeches and photographs completed on site. A good memory for color and mood allows her to recreate the scene to communicate to viewers the beauty, the sense of excitement, or the feeling of joy in a scene. Her inspiration comes from people and nature, and often includes scenes from her travels to Europe and the Middle East. Growing up in the country left her with a deep appreciation for the rural landscape, which is reflected in her paintings. She is fascinated by the sun shining on objects, by nature\'s light and vibrant color, and by people in their environment.
Preferring to work wet-in-wet without modifying the paint with a medium, her paintings are often textured by the extensive use of palette knives. She feels the palette knife allows her to work quickly and spontaneously to record the feeling and convey the impression of the scene. She enjoys manipulating the paint on the canvas to capture that memorable image or character on canvas.
In recent years, Biki has exhibited in a number of local and regional shows and has won several awards for her work. She has also had several solo exhibits in the Southern Illinois area. Her work can currently be found at the Southern Illinois Art Gallery and on her web site www.BikiChaplain.com.
